book advent calendar for kids

With the kids being old enough to understand so much more this holiday season, I decided to introduce the advent calendar concept, in book form! It’s been done before – I can’t take credit for it, but I had so much fun putting it together. Henry and Marie love books, and the idea of giving their library a refresh, in addition to counting down to Christmas, was a win win for me. We’ve been opening a book every night at bedtime, and amazingly, they’ve accepted that it is one a day and have left the others (mostly) untouched! It took a bit of enforcement the first day or two of course, but now it’s understood. I did this project a bit last minute (staying up until midnight the last day of November) and I’m sharing this on the blog a bit later than I had hoped, but better late than never, right?! How do you countdown with your kids?

We had a lot of fun on Friday at our local tree farm! With a fresh dusting of snow on the ground, we frolicked + danced our way through the fields, choosing our favorites along the way. I just love the miniature trees, as they’re the perfect size for Marie + Henry! We made time for a snowball fight before leaving with our fresh greenery…it was a perfect day.

Most of the time, the best toys + activities don’t cost a thing…big boxes make for an awesome rainy day activity! Our training potties (four in all – two bathrooms, two toddlers, whew) arrived in these huge boxes (ahem, a bit wasteful Amazon), but we put them to good use. I didn’t plan to photograph this, but in the moment I realized I should capture the fun and grabbed my camera. We drew welcome mats, window boxes, even decor inside…(that’s Marie working on curtains). Now, on rainy days, we picnic + paint in our box houses. What is your favorite rainy day activity?

The (ballerina) witch + (skeleton) wizard would like to wish you a Happy Halloween! When we started talking to them about the holiday months ago, we showed them costume ideas in catalogs + online, to see what they reacted to, if anything. Marie continuously responded to anything ballerina/tutu related, as well as anything witchy. So…a ballerina witch was born! I’m just gonna take a moment to give myself props for making the tutu…WOOT! Henry, well…he didn’t have much interest in costumes to be honest (insert male cliche here), so I just found a pair of skeleton pajamas and put them on. I got a positive response, so I thought that was a done deal. However, while visiting our local toy shop a few days ago, I spotted the wizard cape, and had a lightbulb moment. A witch + a wizard – YES. Needless to say, it took all week and a few cookies to coax him into wearing it, but he’s really into it now, whew. Sidenote – I think he also resembles a (super adorable + sparkly) grim reaper, or a star wars sith lord. I’m so ridiculously excited for our first family trick-or-treating experience (more than I expected). Wishing you all a very fun, spooky, sugary, memorable…

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Halloween is only a few days away, and we’ve been prepping the kids for their first experience (talking, crafting, reading, you name it). They are getting very excited, and I can’t wait to share their costumes with you! It’s possible that we are a bit more excited than they are, I’ll admit – but don’t all parents feel that way?! Reliving our childhood through them is so fun.
