“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

One of my biggest hurdles in my French-speaking journey has been my perfectionism. In my mind, if I can’t say something perfectly, then I shouldn’t say it all. Thankfully, one of the very first things Carrie Anne James addresses in her lessons is our fear dialogue, and how it affects our fluency. We have to let go of the fear of judgement, and just speak. Focus on the words, and lean into it. The proper accent will come when you’re ready for it. Not to mention, the French find American accents adorable (think Jean Seberg in Breathless). Consistency is key – find ways to surround yourself with the language. Whether it’s film, music, literature, or the most adorable French child telling a captivating story, do what you enjoy most. The more exposure you have to the language, the more time your brain has to absorb the rhythm and syntax, allowing you to imitate the sound. Your imitation won’t be perfect at first…but fake it until you make it! While many would argue there is no such thing as perfection…my endless hunger for it helps propel me forward (in all aspects of my life). I’m just so thankful to have a teacher that keeps me grounded in reality.

Bienvenue et welcome to my new blog series, French is Beautiful! I’ll be documenting my journey of becoming feeling fluent in French, under the tutelage of Carrie Anne James of French is Beautiful. After all, what could be a better name for the series than that?! I had my first lesson last weekend and feel so invigorated. The online program combines weekly video lectures with written, listening + speaking assignments, digital immersion guides, and private Skype coaching! Carrie’s method of teaching is refreshingly natural, and she instantly made me feel comfortable and confident. I’m starting at the beginning, with her Level 1 course, for a three month duration, but will be studying with her all the way to Level 3 (and beyond)! I’m thrilled to review, refresh, and build on what I know, and hope you will follow along with me.

bon weekend

Hello 2015! It’s the first weekend of the new year, and I’ve got a big smile on my face (much like the one above). I’m bursting with excitement + ideas for the new year! I don’t write resolutions, but I certainly keep a list of goals. One that has remained at the top of that list for many years is to better my French, and eventually, achieve fluency (which I wrote about here). I’ve been struggling to find the time to further my language skills, but I’m not going to let life get in the way any longer. I recently discovered Carrie Anne James of French is Beautiful (aka @theparisdarling), and I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be under her tutelage beginning next week! We’ll be collaborating on a new series here on the blog, which I’ll be debuting soon! This photo, taken of me in Paris by the talented Ashley Ludaescher, is the best way to describe how I feel about this new venture–GIDDY. Hopefully you’re feeling as excited as I am about something you have planned for 2015. Just in case you need some inspiration, here are some links for your weekend reading…

BON WEEKEND!

Every time I shop for the kids, my mind drifts away to my favorite children’s boutique in Paris. Steps away from Canal St. Martin (and a stone’s throw from here), Centre Commercial Kids is a modern space packed with handmade treasures, locally sourced goods, and eco-friendly designs. The child of concept store Centre Commercial in the 10th arrondisement, it opened in 2011 and unfortunately, it took me until this year to discover it! Catering to a wide range of ages, their goods are suitable for ages 0-14. The shoe selection alone is worth a trip-I brought back the most amazing boots for Marie + Henry. Between the vintage furniture, local goodies and brands like Oeuf, Blabla + Bobo Choses, you can’t go wrong.

The holiday season is now in full swing, and I’m reviewing my wish list – this paris paper cut map has been on it for far too long. It’s time to change that, don’t you think Santa (ahem, mr. fleurishing)?! Artist and designer Julie Marabelle of Famille Summerbelle creates these intricate designs, each with amazing detail + quirky characters. Her paper masterpieces take over 20 hours of meticulous work…check out this video demonstrating the process (and condensing it into 2 minutes). If you’re not in the market for an original paper cut, they offer printed versions as well. With an extensive collection of gifts (like these fun new house boxes), there is sure to be something for everyone on your list!
