choosing a roof…

Ah, the joys of home ownership…we have to replace our roof. We knew about this when we bought the house, but really thought we'd have a bit more time to do so. However, our insurance company disagrees, so…they win. I've spent the last month researching and reading just about everything I could find about selecting a roof. There are so many options, and it is a big choice-one that is expensive, and pretty permanent. We've had 4 quotes from roofing companies, and have chosen the contractor for the job. We have color samples sitting outside as I write this. We have meticulously chosen gutters, valleys, vents, you name it. So, without boring you with all the details, I will get to my point…

I took these shots of cape cod homes in Hingham, MA, while visiting one of my best friends. You really can't find a more classic example except maybe, in Cape Cod. I LOVE the first home especially, with the grey architectural shingle (which is what we're using). The second has a cedar shake roof (which our home originally had in 1948), which is amazing, but not in our budget. The third is actually local, and we just adore it. Here is the issue-our home is not a classic cape, but really a cottage, (click here). So, we toyed with the idea of a brown roof for that reason, but we are back to the grey now, after looking at these photos again. We love the classic white, black, and grey…but I would love opinions! Thoughts?

I am putting on my "stylist" hat today, and am excited to be involved with a fun new Curious & Company project! I am flattered to be a part of it…these ladies are a talented bunch. Wish me luck, as I am venturing into (somewhat) new territory today. I am bursting with creative energy & ready to go!

This past weekend we drove to Manayunk (a section of Philly) to check out the Three Potato Four barn sale. I had been hearing about them for a while, yet had never made it out there. We arrived early and joined the line waiting to enter…imagine having a line to get into your store-what a dream! The old warehouse was filled with vintage treasures, and we found ourselves wanting to build a room around an old industrial worktable. We left with just a few small items, but now know where to go for inspiration.

cottage living…after renovation

Ok, drumroll please (kidding)…the "after" shots of the kitchen! This is not a fait accompli, but it is at a point where I feel comfortable sharing it. We are waiting on the backsplash, statement light (fan will go), and open shelving (for budgetary reasons). Right now we have an original buit-in hutch we transformed in the opposite corner, which houses all of our dishes and glasses, and a large pantry. We are working on a corner banquette for that side of the room and I will share that once it is complete. So far the layout is functioning perfectly!

This room has come a long way from where it started. You can see the kitchen design plan here if you are interested. We kept the existing base cabinets, but painted them black to disguise the dishwasher. The beam is old salvaged barn wood which we handpicked to enhance the support beam (which wasn't pretty). It adds a touch of farmhouse style which I love. It is so much harder making design decisions for myself, but I am very happy with our choices, and the overall feel of the space. I would love to hear your thoughts!
