minecraft themed birthday

Our babies are nine!! What?! I asked them what they wanted for their ninth birthday, and the answer was both unanimous and instant – MINECRAFT. Marie and Henry discovered the game late last year and quickly developed an obsession (as many understandably do). I was immediately impressed with the endless possibilities of the game, to include the educational factor. I refer to it as AutoCAD with monsters, because the structures and interiors they create in-game are insanely complex and cool. While the theme is not “on brand” for me, lol…I love a challenge and had so much fun pulling it all together. Perhaps this could help inspire your Minecraft-themed fête! More photos + sources below…

Our dining room (in our new/old home) made for a pretty great backdrop – please ignore the baby blue walls, they will be going away soon (they were here when we moved in). I had a lot of fun arranging everything for maximum impact, especially as they came downstairs. We had a fun morning and opened a few small things, but then they stayed away while we set this up, and came down once their grandparents arrived. It was just family – we’re still laying low with friends, etc. due to Delta and the fact that they can’t get vaccinated yet. Their faces were priceless (I shared the video of that and more on Instagram stories). They weren’t expecting such a big display…all of my hard work paid off and then some!

The (carrot) cake is the same one they’ve had every year since their first birthday, and we look forward to it each year! I didn’t get too crazy with the snacks and food since it was just six of us. There’s certainly no shortage of Minecraft-themed food ideas online if you need some…so many creative ideas. I just kept it simple with colored candy, pretzels + pirouettes (which look like branches), and red twizzlers (to mimic the TNT in the game). After cake they opened presents, which mostly consisted of LEGO sets, quite a few books (here are their favorites on the subject), these fun Minecraft pins on Etsy, and I surprised them with potion lights – which were not on their wish list but were a big hit!
